Updating the WHOIS contact details on a domain name

What is WHOIS and how is the data collected?

The WHOIS system is an internet record listing which identifies who owns a domain name and how that individual/business may be contacted.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a nonprofit organisation who oversee the policies and procedures surrounding domain names, DNS, and the many namespaces of the internet.

ICANN policy requires that specific data is provided when registering a domain name and that this personal information is then stored by the registrar in what is known as a WHOIS record.

WHOIS records have proven to be extremely useful and are thus considered an essential resource in maintaining the integrity of the domain name environment.

At VentraIP we refer to the WHOIS records as your domain name contact details. It’s important to keep your domain name contacts up-to-date because expiry notices, policy reminders, and other important information is sent to this address.

How do I update my domain contact information?

  1. Log in to VIPcontrol.
  2. Click the My Services link on the top Domain Management from the tabs underneath.
  3. Hit the Manage button for the domain name that you wish to update.
  4. Select the Contacts option under General on the left-hand side.
  5. Here you will be able to update the Registrant Email Address and the Domain Name Contacts.

NOTE: Domain name contact details entered must be valid, true, and correct as required by registrar policy. These details are also different from your VIPcontrol account details.

ID Protection and Domain Privacy

We understand that it is important for many businesses and individuals to have their contact information protected. For this reason, we do offer free ID Protection / Domain Privacy options for extensions that it is available on. ID protection will hide your registrant details from the domain name WHOIS system.

For more information please see our article – How can I enable ID Protection (Domain Privacy) on my domain name registration?
