What is the difference between a domain name and web hosting?
What is a domain name?
A domain name is simply the registration of a name. So, for example, just the name ventraip.com.au.
Purchasing a domain name (also known as registering a domain licence) essentially gives you total control of that name, and you can whatever you’d like with it. Such as host a website and/or some email accounts. Without domain registrations, there would be no way to delegate who can use what names online.
What is a web hosting service?
A website (and sometimes email accounts) needs a home, and that’s what you would use a web hosting service for. A web hosting service is essentially a slot on one of our services, where we provide you with some disk space and other resources, which allow you to host a website.
Purchasing and renewing these services
Domain names and web hosting services are purchased and renewed separately; they’re not the same service.
If you renew your domain name, that doesn’t mean you also renewed your web hosting service and vice versa.
