What is DKIM and why should I use it?

DKIM stands for Domain Keys Identified Mail. Put simply, DKIM is a system that allows an email provider to “sign” an email before it’s sent, so that a recipient email server/service can verify that the email was actually sent from a legitimate source.

More and more email providers/services are using DKIM to verify that an email is legitimate, so it can be a good idea to enable this feature.

Obtaining your DKIM Record

Dedicated Email Hosting

1. Login to VIPcontrol
2. Click on My Services at the top of the page
3. Click on Email Hosting
4. Click on Manage next to your email service
5. Scroll down to DKIM record, where you can see Hostname and Content (TXT)

Google Workspace

Please follow the steps at the bottom of this guide.

How to add the DKIM record

Here is the DNS record information you need, to create a new DKIM record.

• Record Type: TXT
• Hostname: axigen._domainkey.your-domain-name-here.com (this is an example, obtain this from VIPcontrol in the steps above)
• Value: Obtain this from VIPcontrol in the steps above
• TTL: 3600

Google Workspace

• Record Type: TXT
• Hostname: google._domainkey.your-domain-name-here.com
• Value: Obtain this from VIPcontrol in the steps above
• TTL: 3600

Adding the DKIM Record

If your domain name’s DNS settings are managed with a 3rd party, you will need to contact them about setting up your new DKIM record.

A DKIM record is added as a TXT record in your domain name’s DNS settings. If your domain name is using our Free DNS Hosting platform, you can follow these steps to add a TXT record. And if you’re using cPanel to manage your domain name’s DNS records, follow these steps.
