All about Dynamic DNS

What is Dynamic DNS and why would I use it?

You may likely have a dynamic IP address at home, as popularly used by internet service providers (ISPs) for cost-effectiveness. This means that the provider issues you a new IP address intermittently and cycles out your old one.

When you’re using your network to share data, this could be very inconvenient as the IP address is constantly changing, and you would have to provide a new address to users frequently.

Dynamic DNS allows you to use an online DNS server and a domain name that you own to synchronise with your dynamic IP address to ensure a consistent web address. This means whenever your Dynamic IP address changes, your Dynamic DNS subdomain changes accordingly, without you having to make any updates.

How to set up Dynamic DNS

This feature is currently only available on our current range of cPanel hosting plans.

  1. Log in to your cPanel hosting from VIPcontrol.
  2. Navigate to the Dynamic DNS button un the Domains section of cPanel.
  3. Click the orange + Create button.
  4. Nominate a sub-domain for your Dynamic DNS address. For example, you could choose home.mydomain.com, or server.mydomain.com
  5. Optional – click Manually Enter an IP Address to nominate a local address that this subdomain is designated to. This is useful when there are multiple devices in a network and you only want this to apply to that specific device.
  6. Add a description to help you remember the purpose of this address.
  7. Click + Create to finalise.

This will take you back to the main Dynamic DNS page in cPanel.

From here, you can view and copy the unique URL for this address which can be copied to your DDNS compatible device (such as your home router) or software.  If you run into any trouble finding where to put this URL, contact your Internet Service Provider for further assistance.

You can learn more via the official cPanel documentation for this feature.
